About This Place

El Rancherito of Mt Vernon, IL is a vibrant Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurant located conveniently on Broadway Street, serving up an authentic taste of Mexico right in the heart of Illinois. This lively spot is perfect for those craving a delicious blend of traditional Mexican flavors and hearty Tex-Mex favorites, all delivered in a warm and festive atmosphere that transports diners straight to a Mexican resort getaway.

From the moment you step inside, El Rancherito impresses with its inviting decor that balances between a casual dining space and a lively sports bar, giving guests the option to choose their preferred vibe. Whether you’re there for a relaxing meal or to enjoy the energetic buzz during a game, it’s a dining experience that caters well to groups, families, and solo travelers alike.

The menu at El Rancherito is expansive and thoughtfully curated to satisfy all cravings. For starters, the Queso Fundido—Mexican sausage melted with cheese and pico de gallo—is a rich, melty delight served alongside rice, beans, and tortillas that are perfect for scooping every last bit. For main dishes, the standout Molcajete Steak offers an impressive combination of steak, chicken, and shrimp grilled with vibrant bell peppers, onions, and tomatoes, all topped with gooey melted cheese and zesty ranchero sauce, presented sizzling hot in a traditional stone bowl. This dish is flavorful and satisfying, though some might hope for a bit more generous portions of protein to balance the abundant vegetables.

For those seeking classic Tex-Mex comfort, the Chicken Fajita, Carnitas, and the signature El Rancherito Fajita deliver tender, perfectly seasoned meats that dance on the palate alongside fresh vegetables and warm tortillas. The Taco Salad and Street Tacos are equally popular, offering fresh, vibrant flavors with crisp lettuce, creamy guacamole, and zesty salsas. Not to be missed are their jumbo-sized creations like the Chipotle Burrito and the Combination Tostadas Burritos Taco—generous portions brimming with authentic spice and bold ingredients.

With a keen eye for a well-rounded dining experience, El Rancherito also offers a variety of lunch combos that are both affordable and hearty. Combos such as the #3 Lunch Combo featuring a bean burrito and cheese enchilada, or the #1 Lunch Combo with chile relleno, tacos, beans, and a guacamole salad, provide excellent value without sacrificing flavor. The menu also includes options like the comforting Tortilla Soup, a warm and soothing choice perfect for lunch or an appetizer.

The beverage offerings are nothing short of spirited, with creative cocktails designed to elevate your meal. The Raspberry Margaritas, Frozen Mango Margarita, and the eye-catching Eclipse Margarita adorned with edible glitter add a festive flair, while fruity sangrias and a selection of beer round out the drink menu. These drinks not only refresh the palate but complement the bold spices of the food perfectly.

Customer reviews frequently praise the freshness and temperature of the food, with many remarking on the quick service even during busy times. The staff’s attentiveness, especially when managing large parties, ensures a pleasant experience for all guests. While some patrons note that the silverware cleanliness could be improved, this small issue is overshadowed by the overall quality of the dishes and the warm hospitality. Diners often come away impressed by the large portions and the restaurant’s commitment to delivering a flavorful and memorable Mexican dining adventure.

Whether you’re stopping by for a quick lunch combo or indulging in a leisurely dinner featuring sizzling fajitas or the iconic molcajete, El Rancherito offers a flavorful, authentic, and lively escape to Mexican cuisine in Mt Vernon’s friendly dining scene.

Solid Mexican place. Huge menu can be a bit overwhelming. Fajitas were recommended. We enjoyed the Eclipse Margaritas-edible glitter? Yes please. I had the seafood molcajete. Everything was great. Large portions.

Great food and service was not to bad. It was rather busy but they still managed to check and make sure me and the party of 16 was okay. Overall great experience.

At the recommendation of a friend, we stopped here for lunch. After walking in, we recognized its split into part restaurant and part sports bar. Each section has its own area so make sure if you have a preference you request that before they seat you at your table. The place is decked out to make you feel like you are at a resort in Mexico. The menu is huge so you'll be able to find something for everyone which can also be overwhelming. They also bring a bowl of warm chips and salsa to snack on while you wait for your food. Be mindful when you order food as the plates are huge! While I failed to get a pic of their frozen margarita, I highly recommend it. It's so good, it's dangerous, especially on a hot day! Would definitely visit here again if were ever in the area.

I came to eat with my husband and we ordered a molcajete. It was really delicious, but my only suggestion is that it needed more protein. This dish comes with chicken, beef, and shrimp. "I only saw two pieces of meat." They were more vegetables than protein. Otherwise, it was delicious.
